Lenovo AR headset

So, Lenovo is releasing this AR headset, that works with a reflective visor, and a smartphone. It's a step up from what we saw with Pokemon Go. (I occasionally see some die-hard players out there still.)

I will be interested to see how well this is adopted. AR is in the early stages and for industrial applications it's clear that it will be well received. How much people use it for fun, remains to be seen -- but I think it's going to be a it. (maybe not in this iteration.)

NewAtlas  (Source) much more there.

The Mirage headset sports a pair of motion-tracking cameras that keep watch for two markers. First there's a tracking beacon you place on the floor, which tells the system where the ground is and allows the projected characters to find their footing. And of course there's your controller, which looks like the handle of a lightsaber with a glowing nub of a blade on the end.

When you look at the thing in your hand through the AR goggles, a beam of light emerges from the tip with that all-too-familiar hum. It really feels like you're wielding one of the most iconic weapons in movie history, and it's almost entertaining enough just to swing it around and watch it follow your every move. The next step – turn that lightsaber onto some deserving droids.

******

The app includes a few other game modes as well. In a similar vein to the droid defense game we played, you can also take on bad guys like Darth Vader and Kylo Ren in lightsaber battles. If you want to slow things down a bit, the classic Holochess game we see in A New Hope is now an (augmented) reality, with players directing the alien pieces around the board by pointing the lightsaber stub. And finally, a mode called Strategic Combat turns your living room floor into a warzone between the Rebels and the Empire, in a strategy game that looks like Age of Empires.

Space Needle VR Bar...

This will probably generate a lot of interest. I have tried VR in a "fear of heights" kind of experiment, and it had a more profound effect than I thought it would.

This is part of the whole growth process. I'll try to get down there to check this out in person.

SEATTLE, Oct. 26, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- The Space Needle has launched a free virtual reality (VR) installation, The VR Bar, that offers guests four extraordinary ways to experience Seattle's most iconic landmark. In partnership with Panogs and Graffix, the Space Needle developed a sleek bar that gives visitors the virtual experience of walking the Space Needle's outer Halo, flying a seaplane above Lake Union, soaring over Seattle, and bungee jumping from 520' in the air. Included with the price of admission, The VR Bar is available to all guests who visit the Space Needle's Observation Deck.

"Since the Space Needle opened for the 1962 World's Fair, the tower has symbolized innovation and endless possibilities," said Space Needle Chief Marketing Officer Karen Olson. "Today, we're taking that pioneering spirit above and beyond with digital experiences designed to give guests new and exciting ways to interact with Seattle's most iconic landmark."

Panogs, a leading photographic agency that focuses on VR storytelling, refers to the project as one of its most technological challenges to date.

"In less than 30 days, our team was set with the task of developing an authentic and thrilling bungee jump experience," explained Gavin Farrell, Panogs co-founder. "Two of our biggest challenges were navigating the best way to record footage on such a uniquely designed structure, and how to keep the cameras stabilized during the bungee jump fall. While drones are typically used to capture aerial footage, our team dropped a camera from the Space Needle's 520' Observation Deck, which captured a more realistic descent."

In addition to Panogs working with a mechanical engineer to design the camera drop-system, the company also partnered with a gimbal design specialist from Advance Visuals to develop AutoGimbal, a gimbal specifically designed to stabilize the cameras during the free fall. The AutoGimbal measures angular velocity 800 times a second, and the information is used to calculate the amount of motion in the opposite direction. This allowed the camera to remain compass-locked during the free fall with all potential spin and other movement distractions being completely absorbed by the AutoGimbal.

Once the 360-degree videos were completed, Graffix—a design and build fabricator of signage and branded environments—customized a one-of-a-kind VR installation for the experiences. Also focusing on The VR Bar's user interface and software development, Graffix created a user experience that directly aligned with the Space Needle's brand and vision.

"We were challenged to create a unique interactive exhibit that would facilitate a virtual reality user experience in an environment where there are a varied set of users," said the Graffix President Chris Richardson.

The VR Bar is part of the Space Needle's larger initiative to enhance guests' experiences using technology. In the past few years, the Space Needle has launched a series of digital experiences including augmented reality, virtual reality, interactive experiences, and mixed reality technologies. Visit www.spaceneedle.com/wow/ for more information on the Space Needle's digital experiences.

Comcast & Charter Punished for Cord Cutting

Going Mobile!!

Comcast & Charter

Cord Cutting Accelerates!

Comcast lost 125,000 video subscribers while Charter's pay-TV rolls declined by 105,000, reflecting the broader trend of Netflix and other streaming companies luring away traditional cable customers.

Shares of Comcast were falling 1.4% to $36.31 on Thursday afternoon, with the video losses coming in at the mid-point of the revised guidance that the company provided in September. But Charter was tumbling more than 8% to $316.50 as it reported greater-than-expected subscriber losses and also missed forecasts for other key metrics.

Comcast badly wants to hold onto its video subscribers, although Chairman and CEO Brian Roberts told investors during a Thursday morning investor call that the cable operator has been preparing for the world of cord cutting.

"We anticipated this shift," Roberts said. Comcast invested in its Emmy-winning X1 entertainment operating system that allows users to watch Netflix or Alphabet's YouTube via its platform, developed a remote control that recognizes voice commands and launched the Xfinity streaming app, among other initiatives that enhance its video service.

When customers cut the cord to Comcast's pay-tv offering, Roberts and other executives suggested, they don't kill the cable operator's model.

"Broadband connectivity, both residential and business -- that's now a $20 billion-year business," Roberts said.

Something just for fun, I'm sure it will be doing even better with laser beams. A talking fish in the mean time can be fun.

Microvision Wins Even if it Loses

A reader was kind enough to send a copy of a newsletter I hadn't seen until now from http://bonnerandpartners.com/exponential-tech-investor/
I do rather like that they echo my 10% of the market theory.

This is a snippit of the newsletter part of a substantial article on MicroVision

Thanks Bart

MicroVision Wins Even if It Loses

You might be surprised about what I say next.

Whether or not MicroVision’s technology is in the iPhone 8 or if it licenses its technology for the iPhone 8, it will still come out a big winner.

What is important here is the impact to the overall industry. The moment that Apple releases augmented reality as a feature, the rest of the industry will copy it, just as it has with every major new feature that Apple has released since the very first iPhone in 2007.

And remember, Apple’s technology and patents are “in house.” Apple isn’t licensing its 3D sensing technology out to its competition, it wants to keep it to itself. Apple sees its technology as a competitive advantage.

So where is the industry going to go for the technology and intellectual property to compete with Apple in 3D sensing and laser beam scanning? You guessed it… MicroVision.

And the rest of the market is much larger than Apple’s shipment volumes. Samsung alone shipped 309 million smartphones in 2016, and Huawei shipped 139 million. In total, 1.27 billion non-Apple smartphones were shipped in 2016. That is a massive market.

Now, let’s assume that 1.3 billion non-Apple smartphones are shipped in 2018. If MicroVision technology is used in only 10% of those phones, that is 130 million units.

Applying my estimation of a $2.50 licensing fee to those volumes, MicroVision gets $325 million in sales. Again, at an EV/Sales ratio of 5, we’d be looking at an enterprise value of $1.6 billion, 13 times where it is trading today.

I believe MicroVision’s time has finally come. I deeply respect the company’s tenacity after all of these years. It was too far ahead of its time. But the market is ready now and we have a shot of making 10 times our money or more on this exciting investment opportunity.

Great Hockey Players....

Laser Projection Phone & Competition

Just had a nice conversation with Joe, and he said, here, check this out.

The article is like we have seen before, but check out the interesting looking device in the picture. Looks like a dedicated PicoP gaming device.

REVIEW: Today's China smartphone market, market competition is not only a sea of blood, is a winner-take-all market almost, then the smart phone giant Lin Li of the jungle, with its own style of technical school or fever also literary small fresh Have your own living space?

Today's China smart phone market, both a blood sea competition market, but also a winner almost take-all of the market, then the giant in the smart phone jungle, with their own style of technology fever or fresh arts have their own fresh The living space?

June 28, 2017 MWC during the Shanghai exhibition, by the Green Orange mobile phone produced VOGA V laser projection phone officially debut, through the built-in laser projection components, VOGA V can cast more than 100 inches of large screen, mobile phone screen size restrictions to be complete liberation. VOGA V to break the limitations of conventional people and the screen limitations, to give people a new unlimited horizon experience, but also for smart phones opened a new window.

VOGA V laser projection phone with advanced MEMS laser projection technology, the three-color laser beam projected on the interface to form a clear image, and no focus, you can always keep the picture clear, even oblique delivery screen, but also through the smart trapezoidal The calibration is displayed as a standard screen. In addition, thanks to MEMS technology, out of the previous DLP projection phone power consumption is too large embarrassment, equipped with 4000mAh large battery, continuous projection of four hours, enough to watch two large.

VOGA series brand is located in Rijiake Group President and CEO Le Jia Ming said, VOGA V positioning is "light entertainment, light business, light family", the target market, including some white-collar male users in the city, like sports, technology, experience Must pursue. At the same time, for the past desktop projector heat problems, Le Jia Ming said that the laser projection power consumption is lower than the DLP technology, coupled with the VOGA V structural design optimization, as well as the improvement of cooling materials, we can better To control its temperature, and this temperature is the consumer can accept the temperature

In fact, any market, there is always a lot of gaps between the giants, often this is later the growth of subversive fertile soil, when Apple is also through this way to subvert the Nokia. Although the laser projection phone is now avant-garde and niche, but who can guarantee that it does not have a specific fan group? Not long ago, VOGA and the International Champions League contract, full sponsor 2017 International Champions League in China, VOGA V laser projection phone has officially become ICC official only designated mobile phone. See, VOGA survived.

Hololens Restricted FOV & Microsoft Patent

Those who have been following Hololens (still a very small part of the population) have known for a while that they have a very significant usability problem with a narrow field of view. That has been addressed here a number of times. (CES Day 3) When I had the opportunity to test it, the NOMAD from Microvision outclassed everything else in terms of field of view.

The mention in this patent is very interesting, it doesn't necessarily mean any more than they absolutely know Microvision is there.

I was invited to visit Microsoft this week. (Another purpose) but I did ask about Hololens, and looked for it. It's in their visitor center, but kept under glass that was all I could see.

Microsoft may have solved one of the biggest limitations with its HoloLens headset. Since its first unveiling, the device has suffered from a restricted field of view. A patent filing suggests a feasible way to increase the range has been developed.

From Patent Scope

Below from Description:

[0028] The display engine 204 can include, e.g., an image former 206, a collimating lens 208 and an illuminator 210, but is not limited thereto. The image former 206 can be implemented using a transmissive projection technology where a light source is modulated by an optically active material, and backlit with white light. These technologies are usually implemented using liquid crystal display (LCD) type displays with powerful backlights and high optical energy densities. The illuminator 210 can provide the aforementioned backlighting. The image former 206 can also be implemented using a reflective technology for which external light is reflected and modulated by an optically active material. Digital light processing (DLP), liquid crystal on silicon (LCOS) and Mirasol® display technology from Qualcomm, Inc. are all examples of reflective technologies. Alternatively, the image former 206 can be implemented using an emissive technology where light is generated by a display, see for example, a PicoP™ display engine from Microvision, Inc. Another example of emissive display technology is a micro organic light emitting diode (OLED) display. Companies such as eMagin and Microoled provide examples of micro OLED displays. The image former 206, alone or in combination with the illuminator 210, can also be referred to as a micro display. The collimating lens 208 is arranged to receive a diverging display image from the image former 206, to collimate the display image, and to direct the collimated image toward the input-coupler 112 of the waveguide 100. In accordance with an embodiment, an entry pupil associated with the waveguide may be approximately the same size as an exit pupil associated with the image former 206, e.g., 5 mm or less in some embodiments, but is not limited thereto.

Thanks all the people who dig for stuff like this and post it.

Apple Car Spotted in the Wild

There is a lot going on in this space.....

keep watching...

Insights.Dice.com

From the Twitter Feed

But perhaps everyone is right. A response to Higgins’ tweet notes LiDAR on the roof is a unique choice. It’s entirely possible Apple has struck agreements to build a self-driving car platform for the roofs of production vehicles. A Toyota Camry without Apple’ self-driving tech would look much like the car you see on the road today; with it, the roof may be a touch higher or bulkier, with tinted glass to allow the LiDAR and cameras to operate without obstruction.
This concept also creates an option for car buyers and more flexibility for auto manufacturers; Apple could hide that inelegant unit under bespoke roof assembles. Mom’s new Subaru would be able to use the same self-driving tech as your fancy new BMW, without much aesthetic sacrifice.
The missing link here is what this will mean for tech pros. We’d like to think Apple is also mindful of its developer base, and has side projects specifically geared toward app creation on this new-look platform. SDKs and APIs for apps used in a vehicle laced with Apple technology would be an entirely new market for developers to tap into (CarPlay apps are basically skinned iOS apps). Existing platforms are clunky and have a high barrier to entry; let’s hope Apple is putting in work on this front, too.

AR Glasses -- 5 years to mainstream

"Mainstream" is a significant term, and I don't think this is the kind of guy who will misuse it. Personal computers were well known for about 15 years before you could call them "MainStream."

AR’s Future is Glasses, Not Phones, Says Niantic CEO

John Hanke expects it will take about five years before the technology is mainstream

LAGUNA BEACH, Calif.—The future platform of augmented reality will be on glasses, not smartphones, says John Hanke, chief executive of Niantic Inc., developer of the hit AR game, Pokémon Go.

Timer...

I noticed a few people put a bit more emphasis on the timer than is healthy, so let me clarify.

When they shipped samples from engine one late last year it took 78 days for them to announce an order for that engine.

I started the timer when shipping samples from engine #2 was announced.

That's ALL it means.

It's entirely possible that an order of this engine would not be announced, because taking such an order is in the ordinary course of business. (If I were the customer I wouldn't want it to be)

AR/VR Video from Microsoft

Kind of shows where some things are heading. Most of what you're seeing here is VR -- AR, where Microvision will likely live is going to be better.

It's a cool video. half through it now... worth watching to this point.

It strikes me that the characters used in the middle of the film look a lot like the "Mi" characters from Nintendo. (see photo below)

Thanks Walt

And an ad they have about Mixed Reality.... there will be a lot of buzz about this pretty soon.

From the looks of it, Gamers will go crazy for this -- and they are tech leaders -- early adopters of new technologies.

What the squeeze looks like

A good friend of mine, excellent trader and patent sleuth told me about this company a couple of days ago.

He said this is what MVIS will look like pretty soon... let the shorts pile on, this will be fun.

Microvision with patents alone is crazily undervalued.

Allview & VogaV

When I first saw the link to this I thought it was another fake. I don't think so now.

It appears to be the first European appearance of the Voga V. Starting in Romania.

The appearance in a country that is a member of the EU is a good thing in a number of ways.

Soon Microvision will be an "overnight success."

The use of TOF infrared laser scanning may make Minnesota a more popular place.

This is fairly old, we haven't seen it yet, but it may be waiting for a more budget conscious and smaller laser scanning component.

Recently there have been a few new use scenarios that seem to break previous molds.... checking them out...

Robo Fop -- Berlin IFA

Virtual assistants are all the rage at this year’s IFA, but RoBoHon, the sharp-dressed bot from Sharp Corporation, gets our vote, and not only because he can detect your face and tell you that he likes you. The 20-centimetre-tall robo-phone hybrid is voice-controlled and can make calls, read messages and emails out loud, auto-type dictated replies, click selfies and group photographs, double as a talking alarm clock, as well as display images, videos and maps onto walls and other surfaces. The robot’s back is a small touchscreen for more complicated functions. While the device has been available in Japan since last year, its latest iteration (with English-language abilities) will make its way to other markets, starting with Europe, from this year.
