Augmented Reality's Future

Microvision leads in augmented reality. The linked article explains why retailing will be one of the big early adopters -- and how AR will reach the masses. (It will be extremely useful in many industrial applications, but those will have a very limited audience.)

By 2020, augmented and virtual reality market will be worth $ 150 billion. Google, Microsoft and Facebook have already made large investments in AR solutions; still, some experts fail to predict where the market is actually going. There are several industries that will benefit from AR applications, including healthcare, tourism and entertainment. However, it is retailers who’ll be the first to hit the AR jackpot.

Augmented Reality is the integration of graphic content into live videos or user environment. AR apps for smartphones and tablets analyze web camera or GPS data to provide users with relevant content. The technology was first implemented by Boeing who used AR-enabled hamlets for complex wiring and (later) staff training. By 2018, the number of augmented reality users is expected to reach 200 million.

There are several examples of great augmented reality apps used by shops and restaurants. Yihaodian, China’s largest online grocery store, built over 1 thousand virtual shops in various public places. The stores are only visible to customers who download the Yihaodian AR application; once you’ve chosen the goods, they’ll be delivered directly to your home. In 2013, Yihaodian moved over 250 imported items; this year the store set a Guinness record, selling 2 million boxed of milk in less than an hour. 

A clever AR strategy was implemented by Tokyo Aquarium; their Penguin Navi app integrates cute penguins into smartphone/tablet cameras to navigate visitors. With the introduction of Penguin Navy, the Aquarium’s attendance increased by 152 percent.

Chinese Phones Hit the U.S.

Chinese smartphones are big globally, but little-known to U.S. shoppers obsessed with Apple and Samsung. In 2016, expect Chinese brands that don’t just undercut on price, but bring features from China’s thriving mobile culture. Huawei, the world’s third-largest smartphone maker, made the $449 Nexus 6P and has declared its intention for a U.S. launch of its flagship Mate 8, which also has a metal body, fingerprint scanner and large battery. Letv, a brand created by known as the “ Steve Jobs of China,” is also poised for a big U.S. splash. Then the ball’s in the court of the enormously valued startup Xiaomi, which has downplayed U.S. launch plans.

How to get ready: If you’re on the fence about buying a new Android phone right now, hold off. At the very least, don’t sign a service contract that ties you to a handset.

Phones are TVs -- (Why we're jealous of Chinese Smartphones)

In China, phones aren’t second-class citizens when it comes to watching shows and movies.

The best stuff is mostly available to stream online. China’s historic challenges with protecting intellectual property have helped the market invent new business models for media. Services like Youku Tudou, iQiyi and Tencent Video convinced many piracy-stricken content owners to join, rather than fight, the demand for online video by making it legitimate and getting paid for it through video advertisements. If you pay, you watch without ads.

Chinese can legally watch recent episodes of “Game of Thrones” free on a video site owned by Tencent, though censors make it considerably less exciting than what Americans see on HBO.

Now China’s online video services are even producing 360-degree virtual reality shows designed for the mobile world. We’re not holding our breath for U.S. TV producers to invest in a VR version of “The Big Bang Theory” anytime soon.

Cicret Bracelet -- into production

I will admit that I am still dubious of this concept - at least how it has been shown. Cicret has been featured here before -- and there was enough to point to MicroVision to create almost certainty that it's MicroVision inside. (Here is the dot-connecting about the prototype)

What is additionally interesting is the wearable project from A-su (I didn't make up the name.)

Apple has "Little Left in the Tank"

I've been seeing many reports of Apple downgrades. The theme among the downgrades is that Apple has nothing new to offer.

This, of course is good news for MicroVision with SONY -- because PicoP is clearly something that can be a something new that Apple could include with their biggest money-making product - the iPhone.

The PicoP laser projector is a something new that can be incorporated in smartphones that would be the "something new" that phone companies are desperate for.

That Apple releases "force touch" and every other smart phone maker follows quickly is a sign of things to come with the next major mobile phone innovation. I think the public response to laser projection from smart phones will be very positive.

The TV set would be an enormous market, as would outdoor advertising. The minimal power and size of the installation to large screen result will be very compelling! What "micro laser lights" will be -- I don't know.

Qualper Laser Phone

I was away most of the 17th December, so I had a lot of catching up to do when I got back. Thanks in advance to all those who went digging through and searching for the information that is presented here. I'll try and provide a useful summary and collection of that information here.

The Yahoo message board was buzzing with news of a Projector phone. 


PicoP embedded in a phone is our "holy grail" because with it, users can get optimal use of PicoP -- people instantly able to show their own pictures and short videos with each other. 

First: This all seems to be connected to the "ViewSmart" which was to be released in the US on the 15th, but apparently had some shipping problems. We have near certainty that ViewSmart contains PicoP (but no official confirmation as of yet.)

And a demo they have. That is a near dead ringer for the MVIS engine we know and love. (I added the MicroVision Gen2 Engine to the picture for comparison)



I'm still waiting on a translation of this from the page: But this is the same resolution claimed by the SONY picop module: (Sony PicoP module at MicroVision Website) From the list of specifications.




And 80000:1 is our official contrast. I believe the 1080 mentioned here is for the picture input. -- again, waiting on a translation.


So, there it is for now. I'm sure we'll learn more soon!



A Note that seems appropriate now: I have a lot of discussions with friends (Joe, Omer, Jason, and others) and they hear from me a lot of things that don't get posted here. For example the chances that any one thing is going to happen. When I was asked directly a couple of days ago by one of them what I thought the ODDS of the Yu Yutopia having a partnered product with MicroVision on the 17th, I put them at 1 in 5. Depending on how you read my posts, it may seem like I had higher hopes than that.

One of the other things that I have discussed, particularly with Joe, is the fact that smaller companies adopting this kind of new tech are going to be out the door with it BEFORE the big companies. They have less to lose and more to gain by trying something totally new.

There was an R2D2 shaped refrigerator that popped up a month or so ago, that has PicoP in it, and we talked about it and decided not to post in our respective forums. We did, because we thought people would think it's not a serious product. I did make the point at that time to Joe, that a small, custom product with a short run is the perfect testing ground for PicoP -- and relatively easy for them to incorporate in a small run, small market, limited edition product. And the company doing that can be nimble.. they aren't setting up a massive production line... so a new component can appear in a place like that early

So, seeing this company, one that is almost entirely unknown. (I didn't know it's name before today) isn't particularly surprising to me. I'm sure there will be a few more. I'm pretty confident about companies like Micromax, OnePlusOne, Gionee, and even Lenovo will probably beat Samsung and Apple to the market. But once Apple and Samsung try to get into this market... they'll come in hard.

Oh, and my interpretation on the odds of this particular thing being MicroVision -- they're better than 90%.

SONY Patents & Bollywood

A couple of very interesting patents and commentary from IP Watchdog.

First in this article that made me perk up is the idea that SONY would return to the local distribution of Bollywood movies. That's distributing in India (home of Micromax) and also where they have been testing their seriously miniature tv tuner. Here and Here (Mumbai testing)

It appears they are also getting into leveraging this for advertising -- which also works for us. Maybe they're working on the scary edge of advertising...

In motion picture distribution, Sony Pictures India will return in 2016 to the local distribution of Bollywood movies, an area of business that the company first took on about a decade ago before phasing out Bollywood distribution.

Finally, we wanted to explore an invention in the field of broadcasting advertisements to consumers and described within U.S. Patent Application No. 20150326904, titled Incentivizing Commerce by Regionally Located Broadcast Signal in Conjunction with Automatic Feedback or Filtering. It claims a method for digital commerce in conjunction with a digital broadcast by presenting a commercial message with a display device associated with a digital broadcast receiving device if a predetermined condition detected by either a vehicle sensor or a biometric sensor included in an ancillary device exists, generating response information using ancillary data to determine an effectiveness of the commercial message in generating a response and transmitting the response information if a commercial transaction associated with a commercial message is completed. This invention is designed to incentivize digital commerce in response to a major shift in advertising from broadcast television to digital devices like Internet-enabled televisions.

The Beast -- Is not coming alone. -- UPDATED

Micromax is a company that I have been watching closely.

Micromax is a major innovator, they produce a LOT of new phones and in what I would regard as a relatively forgiving Indian market.

India would be a fantastic first mass-market for PicoP. (Dig through this blog for mentions of India) The demand there for media is huge, and the the country suffers from a shortage of Movie screens. SONY is testing their "tiniest TV tuner" in Mumbai.

So, I have been watching the announcements and teases for this new smart-phone called "Yutopia." It's kind of a prime candidate for PicoP inclusion... but no indications of anything more interesting than it being a super-powerful smart phone until today.

They have teased this device a lot. So, with a launch of this device and something else, it will almost certainly be a companion device -- I see it as though anything completely independent of it would diminish the main event.  ...don't hold your breath, but this is absolutely something to watch this week.

Yu Yutopia is set to be launched on December 17.
Micromax's subsidiary Yu will launch another device along with its much hyped Yu Yutopia smartphone.



"The beast just got a company to make things more interesting. Get ready to find out soon," Yu said in its Twitter account and teased a photograph with a message: "Beast is not coming alone."



However, Yu revealed nothing else about the other device that is to be launched alongside Yu Yutopia. Now that could be another smartphone, tablet or just any accessory.



Yu was set to launch the Yutopia last week on December 7 but deferred the launch reportedly due to a patent case between Ericsson and Micromax. Now Yu Yutopia is set to be launched on December 17 (Thursday).



Yu has been teasing various features of Yutopia since months. On the basis of its teasers, the Yu Yutopia is expected to come with 4 GB RAM, 2K resolution based 5.2 inch screen, the powerful Snapdragon 810 octa core CPU, 32 GB of inbuilt storage, metal body, Android Lollipop operating system, 21 megapixel rear camera, an 8 megapixel front camera, dual SIM, and micro SD card support.

Hololens -- Chances looking better

I've been watching Hololens since it was first announced. Occasionally a cool something was posted on the "digging" page and it had started to look like the odds were that MVIS was not included in the device.

A number of comments did surface about the device that the field of view was quite limited, and that while it was really cool, the use of it wasn't as awesome as the video demos made it seem.

So, this recent news that they're pursuing different technologies from the one used in Israel. -- That's interesting. 

If you think through the system, it has some sensors, displays and a computer. That's it. It could be sensors, it could be the display. I don't think there's any chance that it's the computer - Microsoft in Redmond seems to have a handle on that.

So, the next question is: Are there any probable connections between MicroVision and Hololens?

Well yes, there do seem to be: Michael Beard, Scott Woltman

Now, I don't KNOW anything here, but this looks very interesting and deserves to be watched very closely. Microsoft seems to have much of Hololens devlopment as an open secret -- so chances are if MicroVision really will be included in the Hololens device word should get out relatively soon.
